Memorable Melodies

This program is designed for your hospice appropriate loved one with end stage Alzheimer’s, Dementia, or a cognitive disorder. This program was created to increase quality of life care for both your loved one and the caregiver with a specialized non pharmacological approach to provide comfort and support through music.

At Lotus Blossom Hospice, we believe that music is good for the soul.

Singing or listening to songs provides behavioral and emotional benefits in those diagnosed with Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Research suggests that the memories of music are not damaged by the disease and are often preserved in key brain areas linked to these memorable melodies.

Music can:

  • Reduce depression and anxiety

  • Relieve stress

  • Reduce agitation

The caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients may experience a reduction in caregiver stress and anxiety when listening to music. Music is a great way to reconnect with loved ones, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease who have difficulty communicating.

As part of the Memorable Melodies program, Lotus Blossom Hospice will provide the patients with Alzheimer’s a small music device such as a MP3 player.  After speaker to family members and gathering a favorite playlist, the music will be uploaded to the device.  Each individual playlist is as unique as your loved one.

Contemplate these tips if utilizing music when assisting a loved one who has Alzheimer’s:

  • Make a playlist of your loved one's preferences. What melodies evokes memories of happy times in his or her life?

  • Play specific melodies based on the mood. Play soothing music to calm a loved one during a morning hygiene routine. Play upbeat music to boost your loved one's mood.

  • Avoid overstimulation. Eliminate competing noises when playing music, such as a TV.

  • Encourage movement. Encourage your loved one to clap, sing or tap his or her feet to the rhythm. Consider dancing with your loved one if it is physically possible.

  • Sing along. To boost the mood, encourage your loved one to sing along because singing helps stimulate unique memories.

  • Pay attention to your loved one's reaction. If your loved one enjoys particular rhythms, play them often.
